Office 2013 error “The Application Experienced an Internal Error Loading the SSL Libraries” when opening files

Posted on 30th August 2018

Foldr appliance update version 4.10.0.1 (August 2018) switched the SSL security setting to ‘modern’ SSL ciphers to the default configuration. This in turn disables older / weaker protocols such as TLS 1.0 and 1.1 and ciphers such as RC4 and 3DES.

Older Windows 7 & 8 systems running Office 2013 may see the error “The Application Experienced an Internal Error Loading the SSL Libraries” when opening files. To resolve this, the administrator can either revert to the older / legacy SSL ciphers or install the hotfix for the operating system.

Alternatively, you can revert the appliance to legacy SSL ciphers by running the following command on the Foldr appliance console:

set-ciphers legacy

The above command will re-enable TLS 1.0 and 1.1
